Prof. Hilonga is renowned for his groundbreaking Nanofilter water purification technology, a social innovation that has transformed access to safe drinking water in Tanzania and beyond. His expertise spans clean energy, biogas, nanotechnology, and climate resilience, with a unique ability to bridge research, policy, and practice. Over the years, he has worked with governments, international organizations, and communities to design and implement impactful solutions for water, energy, and environmental sustainability. In addition to his leadership role at EREA, Prof. Hilonga has served in academic and entrepreneurial capacities, including as a Professor at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), where he has mentored a new generation of African scientists and innovators. He has also spearheaded major initiatives in agribusiness, carbon credit projects, and plans for a new project on energy tourism, positioning Eastern Africa as a hub for clean energy innovation.

A Tanzanian national, Prof. Hilonga holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Nanotechnology) from Hanyang University in South Korea and a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from NM-AIST. He is widely published in international journals and has authored books on innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development. He has also received multiple international awards for innovation, including recognition by the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Prof. Hilonga is passionate about using science, innovation, and regulation as tools for social transformation. His vision is to advance energy justice, universal access, and regional cooperation—driving Eastern Africa toward a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy future.
